Indirect speech is reporting what you heard. Direct speech is simply saying what you want. Like, he said that is reported speech. So, we have the following ways generally of making reported speech:

다고 대요
라고 + 해요 = 래요
자고 재요
냐고 내요

the right side is their contracted form.

The author said that his latest novel was his best work ever.
그 소설가는 자신의 최신작이 자신의 작품 중 가장 훌륭한 작품이라고 말했다.

3. 다고 하다 use without quotation marks
4. 라고 하다 use with quotation marks

But, here is something pretty funny.

the reported speech is 다고 말했다.
