르 irregulars

~ 르다 ending verbs (고르다 to choose)

The ㄹ on the preceding syllable doubles, and 으 of 르- irregular verbs drops before the ending 아/어 , and instead becomes 러/라 in effect changing 아/어 to 라/러. Choice of 라/러 depends on vowel harmony: 라 after 아, 오 and 러 after 어, 우, 으, 이 vowels.

빠르다	빨라	to be fast
다르다	달라	to be different
모르다	몰라	to nkt know
흐르다	흘러	to flow (water flows)
고르다	골라	to be alt/level,, to choose, to select

Here is an example from parksguide which is under the creative license so I am including the text here

Factual/Declarative (Written)	Present	Past
Positive	빠르다	빨랐다
Negative	빠르지 않다 안 빠르다	빠르지 않았다 안 빨랐다

Dialogue/Conversation (Spoken)	Present	Past
Positive	빨라	빨랐어
Negative	빠르지 않아 안 빨라	빠르지 않았어 안 빨랐어

What follows now are some longer sentence examples, followed by the exceptions to this irregular rule.

E.g. 택시가 버스보다 훨씬 빨라요. Taxis are much faster than buses.

Here is an example with 흐르다 (flow), in the definition of 지나가다:

지나가다: 시간이 흘러가서 과거가 되다 지나가다: time goes by, and becomes the past

흐르다 in 어/아 form is 흘러 which when combined with 가다 gives 흘러가다, not (for example) 흘려가다
Here is another example (오르다, to go up/raise)

은경이의 어깨가 으쓱 올라갔습니다.
남산에 올라 to go up onto namsan mountain (center seoul)

everything has become dry. 모든 것이 말라 버렸군 (from 마르다 to become dry)

exceptions

However, 따르다 is an exception to this rule. dreamer says:

따르다-따라, 따랐다
1. follow, accompany 그 개는 나를 잘 따랐다.
2. pour 술을 따르다. 술을 따라 주었다.

These verbs are simply conjugated the same as are the 으 irregulars
