The stem-changing verbs are a little bit more predictable in that they're usually descriptive verbs and not action verbs. Most changes involve changing the final consonant, such as dropping it, or changing it into another consonant.
The classes of irregular verbs is classified as follows:
- ㄹ ending verbs (알다 to know).
- ㅂ ending verbs (고맙다 to thank)
- ㄷ ending verbs (묻다 to ask, 듣다 to listen,)
The ㄷ is changed to ㄹ when the ㄷprecedes a vowel.
- ~ 르다 ending verbs (고르다 to choose)
어간의 끝 음절(9) '르' 뒤에 오는 어미 '-어'가 '-러'로 바뀔 적
르다 + 어 -> 르러
- ㅎ ending verbs (어떻다 how)
- ㅅ ending verbs (짓다 to build)
when the first letter of the next syllable is a vowel, the final ㅅ is dropped.
These are dealt with in the following topics in this section.
