5. conjunctions (but, and, or)

Connectives and conjunctives allow for complex sentences. That is, they combine two simple sentences into one sentence.

He is a small boy. -> He is a small boy but he is very strong. (cf. compound sentence)

This is not talking about 과 or 와 which are used to connect two nouns, rather this is conjunctions used to connect two different thoughts altogether.

As I"ve mentioned before, these are not separate words, they are 어미 (that is, verb endings) which is special verb endings tossed onto verbs. There are also noun formations which replace these when no verb is required for the sentence (as is common with subordinate clauses or prepositional phrases in English)

There are many examples in the verb ending database section of this site.

1.
2. 어/아서
3. the ubiquitous and simple 어/아 verb form
4. makes an If sentence.
5. 으며

Advanced.

.... 나
.... 며 (this just means and)

Also, simply using the 어/아 form by itself can be a conjunctive.

Here is a little help on this from the forum.

You are pretty and intelligent , but annoying .

너는 예쁘다. 그리고 똑똑하다. 하지만, 짜증난다[성가시다/귀찮다].

Dreamer made 3 different sentences here. Just ended the adjectives with the dictionary form.
예쁘다 is beautiful, 예뻐요 is what you would say to people.
Then, she said 그리고 which you seem to know means and
She also ended smart with the dictionary form.
똑똑하다 is intelligent, or 똑똑해요 for the spoken form.
She then said 하지만 which means but
and then she gave you 3 alternatives for annoying, which are
짜증난다 the dictionary form for which is 짜증나다
성가시다
귀찮다
all of which mean annoying.

However, you can connect these together by using 어미 which are verb endings, which as you probably know are a key to Korean, but difficult.

or you may put them in one sentence by using short forms of conjunctions.

너는 예쁘고, 똑똑하지만[똑똑하나] 짜증난다.

on 예쁘다 she took off the 다 and added 고 in its place which makes 예쁘고 which means and pretty
The ending for but is VST + 지만 so she took the 다 off of 하다 to make 하 and then she added onto it 지만 to make 하지만 which means smart, but
the rest of the sentence is unchanged.

My answer would have been to show you the two endings, which are 고 and 지만. There are more of these in the verb endings section. The links are and 지만.

I don`t have much information for those 2 endings, but they are elementary, you need to know them. They will be in your Korean books somewhere.

You many know 고 from 하고 which means and
