7. relative (also called dependent) clauses

These are very popular in Korean. It is worth explaining how they are formed. What do all the following have in common?

스테이크 먹는 상식 common sense about how to eat steak (literally, eating-steak common sense)
이야기하는 것 talking, telling stories (literally, the thing which is telling stories)
안에 있는 파일 files which are in the inside

The answer?
They are relative clauses.

They are made by VERB/ADJECTIVE + 는 + object being modified or PAST-TENSE VERB + 던 + object being modified

Relative clauses are parts of speech (sometimes with, sometimes without) a subject; they begin with the words who, which, that.
They are far more common in Korean so this structure is very important to learn!

Please see the previous section on adjectives to see how they are formed.

There are some very common relative clauses you will constantly hear in Korean:

1. When it .... 할/했을때
2. 의경우 .. in that case

They also use these expressions in their English when they translate, as well.
