Verb conjugation type 1: not change to stem

One of the examples where the stem is not changed is as follows. This is a formal polite ending which you use all the time when you first learn Korean.

갑니다 (to go) -> ‘가-‘ + ‘-ㅂ니다’ -> ‘가다’
합니다 (to do) -> ‘하-‘ + ‘-ㅂ니다’ -> ‘하다’
먹습니다 (to eat) -> ‘먹-‘ + ‘-습니다’ -> ‘먹습니다’
밟습니다 (to step on something) -> ‘밟-‘ + ‘-습니다’ -> 밟습니다.

Please remember there are irregular verbs as discussed in that thread.

Here are some more examples of endings like this one:

park\‘s guide spells out some good examples which are included below, using as an example of this verb form, the 습니다 endings.

I. Present Tense → Formal Written Form (Present)

First Take 다 off an adjective, then:

1. For adjectives without a final consonant, add ㅂ 니다.

Eg.

* 빠르다 → 빠릅니다 = fast
* 크다 → 큽니다 = big
* 착하다 → 착합니다 = kind
* 느리다 → 느립니다 = slow

2. For adjectives with a final consonant, just add 습니다.

Eg.

* 작다 → 작습니다 = small
* 많다 → 많습니다 = many
* 쉽다 → 쉽습니다 = easy
* 차갑다 → 차갑습니다 = cold


II. Past Tense → Formal Written Form (Past)

● Take 다 off the past tense and add 습니다

* 뜨거웠다 → 뜨거웠습니다 = was hot (temperature)
* 차가웠다 → 차가웠습니다 = was cold
* 빨랐다 → 빨랐습니다 = was fast
* 작았다 → 작았습니다 = was small (size)
* 좋았다 → 좋았습니다 = was good
* 재밌었다 → 재밌었습니다 = was fun
* 쉬웠다 → 쉬웠습니다 = was easy
