북한에서 사상과 군사강국의 위력으로 경제 건설을 한다는 의미를 지니고 있는 용어로, 1998년 처음 등장한 이 통치선전 구호.

북한은 1998년 8월 22일 노동당 기관지 로동신문 정론을 통해 처음 강성대국이란 정치적 구호를 내세우고, -- 사상의 강국을 만드는 것부터 시작하여 군대를 혁명의 기둥으로 튼튼히 세우고 그 위력으로 경제건설의 눈부신 비약을 일으키는 것이 주체적인 강성대국 건설방식-- 이라고 밝혔다.

이후 강성대국을 신년사 등에서 전격적으로 내세웠으며 -- 정치.사상의 강국, 군사의 강국, 경제의 강국으로 나눠 추진되고 있다.

김일성종합대학 경제학부 김재서 부학부장은 『조선신보』와의 인터뷰(2000년 1월 1일)에서 강성대국이란 -- 국력이 강하고, 모든 것이 흥하고, 인민들이 세상에 부럼 없이 사는 사회주의 강성대국-- 으로서 사상강국, 군사강국, 경제강국을 의미한다고 설명했다
