누에는 나비목에 속하는 곤충으로, 예전에는 명주실을 얻기 위해 농가에서 많이들 길러 왔다. 누에가 번데기가 될 때, 제몸을 보호하기 위하여 실을 토해 제몸 바깥둘레를 둘러싸 만든 일종의 집이다.

알에서 깨어난 누에는 보통 4번의 잠을 자고, 20여 일 동안 자라서 5령이 끝날 무렵이 되면 고치를 짓기 시작하여, 약 60시간 동안에 무게 2.5g 정도 되는 타원형의 고치를 완성한다. 그리고 고치를 짓고 나서 약 70시간이 지나면 번데기가 되고, 번데기가 나방으로 변할 때에는 이 고치를 뚫고 밖으로 나온다. 누에고치는 흰빛이 나는 것과 누른빛이 나는 것 등 두 가지가 있으며, 1개의 고치에서 풀려나오는 명주실의 길이는 장려품종의 경우 1200~1500m에 이른다
