요약
궤도면에서 달의 뒷면에 항성, 행성 등의 천체가 위치하여 가리워지는 현상을 말한다. 태양이 가리워지는 현상을 일식이라고 한다. 항성은 달의 서쪽 가장자리로부터 잠입하여 동쪽 가장자리에서 출현한다.
본문

달은 약 30분의 시지름을 가지고 지구의 주위를 서쪽에서 동쪽으로 공전(公轉)하고 있기 때문에, 궤도면에 있는 항성 ·행성 등이 달 뒷면에 있게 될 때 가리워지게 되는데, 이 현상을 엄폐라 하고, 태양이 가리워지는 현상을 일식(日蝕)이라고 한다. 항성은 달의 서쪽 가장자리로부터 잠입하여 동쪽 가장자리에서 출현한다.

달의 어두운 가장자리로 잠입하여 출현할 때만 엄폐를 관측할 수 있으나, 잠입 ·출현의 시각을 안시(眼視) 또는 광전관 관측으로 측정하여 예보시각과의 비교로부터 지구의 자전속도의 변동과 역표시(曆表示)를 결정할 수 있다. 또, 같은 항성의 엄폐를 2개소 이상의 지점에서 관측하고, 관측지점 사이의 거리측정에도 사용되었다.

전파망원경으로는 천공의 전파원의 위치를 정밀하게 결정할 수는 없지만, 이와 같은 전파별[電波星]의 엄폐를 관측하면 위치를 자세히 알 수 있게 된다. 이 방법으로 전파별과 광학적(光學的)인 방법으로 발견한 천체와의 동정(同定)이 행하여지고 있다
